“Tonight I sang “For Good” with the LA Philharmonic and Kristin Chenoweth at the Hollywood Bowl. I never thought I would be able to say those words even in my wildest dreams.”
Those are the words of Sarah Horn, a Riverside native and adjunct voice professor at California Baptist University, in her own account of the night she joined Kristin Chenoweth on stage at the Hollywood Bowl to perform the duet “For Good” from “Wicked.”
What began as an evening at a long awaited concert on Friday August 23, 2013, quickly turned into an unforgettable night for Horn when, by a turn of luck, a seat swap put her and her family and friend in the front row and in the perfect spot when Chenoweth began interacting with the audience and asked her to come on stage.
The video of the duet below was captured by Horn’s friend Mike Kestler:
In her interview on ‘Take Two’ for KPCC, Horn recalled the reaction from Chenoweth when she sang the first note, “She had no idea that I could actually sing,” said Horn. “There’s really nothing that could prepare someone to randomly be brought up on stage in front of thousands and thousands of people. My mind was completely blank and all I could think is ‘God help me.’”
Sarah Horn’s performance ended with a standing ovation from the audience and disbelief by many who thought that it might have been staged. Chenoweth’s remarks after Horn left the stage put the the moment in perspective when she said “That voice is teaching our young people,” further saying that “[it] was so inspiring.”
Riverside is home to a wealth of creative and successful individuals and Sarah Horn is another stunning example of the incredible talent we have in our community. Sarah is a Champion for Riverside through her work as a voice coach at California Baptist University and with Riverside Youth Theater she is helping to cultivate and support the future artistic talent of youth in Riverside. It is not known what this dream come true night will bring for Horn, but it is certain that this will be an unforgettable moment and one all Riversiders can enjoy.
